HISTORY, POLICIES & AMENITIES
On June 10, 1895 Fremont B. Chesbrough, noted Bay City lumberman, sold this vacant property to Robert E. Bousfield for $3,600.00. Bousfield and his brother owned the Bousfield Woodenware Works, the world’s largest woodenware factory. They built primarily barrels and kegs. Local legend says that Anna Taylor survived going over Niagara Falls on October 24, 1901, in a Bousfield barrel!
Frank and Eva Woodworth purchased the home from the Bousfields on August 4, 1903 and lived here until 1914. Woodworth was elected mayor of Bay City from 1903 to 1905. They sold the house to Dr. William Ross Ballard in 1914.
Dr. Ballard lived in the home until 1931 and was the first to own an automobile in Bay City. Jack Coryell traded homes, and other considerations, with Dr. Ballard in 1931.
Jack Coryell was a prominent Bay City resident. He owned the Robert Gage Coal Co. and Monitor Sugar Co. among other financial involvements in Bay City. He and his family lived in the home until 1951 when he sold the property to his nephew, Charles Jr.
Charles Coryell Jr. lived in the house until 1975 when he sold it to local attorney, Carl Smith.
Mr. Smith made many of the modern changes to the home, such as adding the breakfast room and the Jacuzzi, as well as renovating the carriage house and parking lot.
Tom and Deb Pietrzak purchased the home from Carl Smith in 2000 and converted it to a bed and breakfast.
We purchased the business from them in September 2006.
